About Oonagh


Oonagh Derby is a fresh and original singer songwriter from Co Armagh in Northern Ireland.

Oonagh’s musical background is in Traditional music learned “around the kitchen table” with her family and the later as part of the traditional band Nua.

She has since branched out on her own to write and perform her own original contemporary songs and music that have an energetic roots/folk style to them.

Her melodic voice sings songs written by a woman for a woman with style and gusto to accompany guitarist Gerard Thompson’s energetic, exciting and undoubtedly powerful guitar playing.

The two have fused together perfectly in this contemporary modern Irish style. They bring together blues and swing with a bit of swap and rock and roll, all wrapped up with an Irish flavour. Their ability to “turn it up” or “tone it down” is abundant and will keep you on your toes!

Oonagh has recently released her debut album “Harmony Street” to great critical acclaim in both musical and commercial circles.”

The Album has just recently picked up the “Best Newcomer” Award from the Live Ireland “livies” in Chicago who awarded this for the first time ever to an non traditional album describing it as “something new and something exciting”

Harmony Street also made it onto the shortlist for the BBC Folk album of the year, a rare thing for a debut album!

Produced by the famed Gerry O Connor and featuring the talents of some of Irelands finest musicians “Harmony Street” as been deemed “A momentous debut album” and it has been said that” rarely has a first album made such an impression” by esteemed musical publications and is enjoying success in places as far afield as Japan and USA and is currently creating a storm Australia!

Oonagh is currently enjoying a highly productive time on the concert stage also, having recently done many high profile gigs such as The Shetland Festival, The Belfast Feile, The Nashville Songwriters Festival, Hammersmith London to name but a few and her songs are being played on radio stations worldwide having achieved “Album of the week” in Scotland and is currently on the heavy rotation schedule in Chicago. She has also been heavily featured in local and national radio programmes. Featuring quite recently on the Gerry Anderson Show and the BBC Folk club with Colum Sands and is a regular on BBC Radio 2 with Mike Harding!

Harmony Street made it to NUMBER ONE in the Irish Music Charts in London and is still after 6 months in the top ten!!

Oonagh is a quantity surveyor and project manager and continues to write songs with a variety of talented people.
